ATOM Mission and

Objective Statements

Purpose

Atom students will be trained to the highest standard of professionalism and ethics for the practice of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the United States.

Mission of the Institute

The Mission of the Institute is to provide students with clinical training programs that prepare them to become qualified independent practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM); complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

Educational Goals

In keeping with its mission, ATOM sets forth seven educational goals for Master’s program graduates:

  • To practice in a professional and ethical manner.

  • To exercise professional clinical judgement with regards to patient assessment, diagnosis and decisions respecting therapeutic modalities, prognosis, and referral.

  • To become proficient in the theory and practice of acupuncture and in the preparation and prescription of Chinese herbal therapy.

  • To become proficient in the theory and practice of nutrition and preventative care and to incorporate these principles and practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine and to be prepared to counsel patients on elements of health.

  • To promote the delivery of health care in the United States fully recognizing the complementary and alternative functions of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Contemporary Western Medicine.

  • To meet the requirements of the Florida Board of Acupuncture and the National Commission for Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) including the ability to pass the State and national acupuncture and herbal certification examinations.

  • To demonstrate commitment to Traditional Chinese Medicine by participating in professional continuing education as a lifelong learning process.

Program Learning Objectives

In keeping with its mission, purpose and goals, ATOM sets forth the following Program learning objectives for Master’s program graduates.

On completion of the Master’s program students will be able to:

  • Apply the foundational knowledge of theory, acupuncture, and Chinese herbal medicine to patient care.

  • Accurately diagnose and develop an effective treatment plan for patients based on information from the medical history, intake, and physical examination.

  • Develop appropriate treatment plans based on TCM principles utilizing acupuncture, Herbal medicine, lifestyle counseling, nutritional counseling, and adjunct modalities.

  • Use critical thinking and professional judgement to appropriately manage a case with ongoing patient care.

  • Demonstrate professional judgement, cultural sensitivity and compassion while delivering high quality patient care.

  • Demonstrate the ability to follow Universal Precautions and CNT to establish a safe clinical environment and practice.

  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with other health care professionals demonstrating an understanding of western biomedical terminology, pathophysiology, and treatment strategies

  • Demonstrate preparedness to establish and maintain a successful clinical practice and participate in a variety of clinical settings.

  • Demonstrate the use of electronic health records and compliance with confidentiality and HIPAA.

  • Honor ethical standards in all interactions with patients and healthcare professionals.

  • Evaluate published research to inform clinical practice and an understanding of public health.

  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and make informed and appropriate referrals.

  • Demonstrate the capacity to engage in regular self-assessment and lifelong learning to achieve continuous professional growth.
